A lot of people like to be fooled into thinking they understand all the aspects of a movie or TV show. Look at Star Trek techo-babble. People think they understand how warp drive engines work because they know all the techno babble.
Donnie Darko is one of those movies that doesn't try to explain every little action, every nuance of what happens. Sometimes when you watch a movie you have to simply let it flow. There is no understanding the mechanism that put Donnie back in bed. That there was some detour in time is enough to know.

or

Perhaps it was like in that movie "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". A Civil War soldier is about to be hung. When he is dropped the rope breaks, he escapes. He goes through a short adventure then SNAP, the rope really didn't break, his neck did. He imagined the rest.

I'd have to say the scales tip more to the side of genius.

i've watched it twice and i still don't understand it. i enjoyed it but i don't know that it is genius. no art is a waste of time even if the only person that enjoys it is it's creator. i don't think it's pretentious or crap though. i liked the ending. also after a couple of out of body experiences and living next door to the head of the satanic church in my local area and only finding that out AFTER i had many many terrifying dreams which he was in while sleeping there i am more and more interested and convinced there is more to this world than the physical, so in that sense i really liked it.

It's 2001 - A Space Odyssey, for a cinema going audience in the 2000's
Both are bewildering, yet compelling!
Who cares what it means. Why are we all here in the first place?
Some questions can't be answered.
Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Hell, I even like A.I. - Artificial Intelligence, and its ending is bizzarre, but it's beautiful to watch!

oh man its a great movie: it could have som many meanings depending on how you look at it, ive seen it about 6 times
i think that that its about how the entire world is engaged in conformity and outlaws anyone non conformist. the main cahracter(forgethisname) is a non conformist and tries for other people to see his view points and see taht there are more ways to live in the world. In the end he lets himself die because he realizes taht no matter what he does, conformity and the "norm" of life will never change.
im prolly not right but thats what me and my friend got out of it

i just have one question
when he knew what fate had for him
why didn't he just do things differently next time around and change it rather than sit there and be clobbered by the engine

Well it's alright. It doesn't go to either of the extremes that your question suggests.
