If it is the bearing in the A/C Compressor Clutch you can just replace the Compressor Clutch. If the noise is in the Compressor itself you will need to have the system evacuated, replace the Compressor and Clutch as a unit, along with the reciever-dryer, then recharge the system. Add some dye during the recharge too, just for later insurance.

Are you sure it is the AC unit? It could be the bearings in the "clutch" unit on the front if the noise is present when the AC is NOT on, or a worn out clutch unit if noisy when the AC IS on.

Have it checked by a competent shop, and hope it is NOT the AC unit.

Just adding "freon" may NOT be the right thing to do, as there is more than 1 type or class of refreigerant used and the wrong one could REALLY foul things up. (Fairly recent legislation has made changes in refreigerants, and "retrofits" mandatory in some cases, depending on what you had initially.)
