My doctor said that if two weeks of anti-inflammatories doesn't work, that he will have me get an MRI of my foot and then possibly give me an injection of cortisone where the pain is. Nothing showed up on the Xray. Well, that NOTHING really hurts...

Is the cortisone shot painful? Does it work?

I have had a similar problem with my feet. I got a cortisone shot after the one got really bad. Did the shot hurt? YES, but it was well worth it!! Later I tried getting a cortisone shot in my wrist for carpral tunnel and it was completely ineffective. My husband gets cortisone shots in his back and in his knee. His back took several treatments to give him really good results, his knee only took one. Would I do it again? Yes and so would he. Give it a try it won't do any damage even if it doesn't help the first time.

Get a pair of crutches if you haven't already. Try taking as much weight and pressure off of that foot as possible. And you will need them after the shot for like two weeks so a little before hand practice won't hurt.

Cortisone injections are given in a series and do not always work for everyone. But it is definately worth a try because some people get the first shot of the series and never feel pain again. It all depends. And if the D.P.M. is going to give you an injection in the foot, they usually numb it first with a cold substance called ethyl chloride so you won't feel anything.

I am not going to lie to you cortizone shots are painful. Because, the medication in the injection needs to be deep to the part of the area that is inflammed. The shot acts directly on the area of inflammation. It slows to dissipates the inflammatory response. Some times they are successful and some times not.

I had one of these shots when I had siatica in my hip. I was always told it was very painful, but when my doctor did it the only thing I felt was the pressure when he was pressing to get as far down as possible. He said he used a pain killer with it and I felt no pain at all. I guess it depends on your doctor.

Also it works immediately. I could hardly believe it....I could barely walk when I went in and I walked out feeling better than I had in weeks.

I have had several in my knees and they are not painful at all. I do know that the knee is one of the easiest, most accessible places for that shot though. The only painful part is the needle. The shot itself has an instant numbing effect.

Shot can be 'sort of' painful but well worth the effort. The idea is to strengthen the muscle and allow it to heal if it is muscle pain. Got one in my shoulder last year and it has not hurt since. Good luck. I also have bone spurs in feet and my Dr hasn't recommended a cort inj.

There is a slight burning sensation when the shot is injected...same as any shot. They do work though...definitely helps the pain!

yes i have
more than once
i have had it in my foot and My wrist
the hands and feet are the boniest part of your body
i am not going to lie to you..
they DO hurt!!
but in the long run they help allot!
the day after the shot is the worst for me
then after that it is great
i had 3 in my foot before i had surgery to remove small bone fragments from my foot
i only had one in my wrist for tendinitis
they only do one in the wrist due to maybe damaging nerves or tendons
that is what my orthopedic surgeon told me
so......it does hurt....but worth it when the pain goes away.
best of luck i still take anti-inflamatories daily

Pain is relative.
What feels excruciating to one person, may hardly even be felt by another.
