"United we stand, Divided we fall"...obviously we must stick together as a nation and defend each other in spite of our differences. We are safer in a united country...However, this country cannot be one sided and refuse to acknowlege the other half...I believe the Republicans went too far and actually damaged this country's ability to be united by it parisan (not unified) approach to everything

Even though I understand your point, the American people will never be in total agreement about everything. The great diversity among the people and their freedom to think as they wish is one thing that makes this country what it is. Unfortunately, I feel like we are living in an age now where the government uses our differences of opinion as a way to take our mind off the big picture. For example, when the death toll numbers are up in Iraq, someone always starts talking about gay marriage or abortion. The war itself is another example. We're told that if we don't support it, we are in fact acting unpatriotically because we care nothing about protecting this country from terrorists ... and from the other side we're told to agree with the war makes us barbarians. We're so concerned as a country about making everyone else think like us that we lose sight of what the real issues are.
