I am sure he knew he was gay. I don't think he woke up one day and suddenly, poof, he was gay.
Have you ever seen the sitcom Will and Grace? The guy who plays Will is straight, married, with kids. People can act. That is what they are paid to do. Do you think people would want to watch a music video with two guys? Maybe members of the gay community, but that is what? 10% of the population? Not good marketing.
How do straight actors act like they are in love with someone when they are in a movie or whatever? It is acting.

I knew George Michael was a sister back when he was in Wham! I am surprised that everyone didn't know. As soon as I saw that video for "A Wonderful Christmastime" I knew he was one of the girls. So I am sure if I knew, others knew. And if others knew - he, himself had to know.

I didn't know, but I suspected it back when he was with Wham!.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter or change the meaning of the song for me. Or my opinion of him.
