As most everyone else has stated, Berra in left, Mantle in center, and Maris is right. What no one touched on was the kind of man Roger Maris was. He was a good and decent man who held to family values and respected baseball probably more than anyone who played the game. He understood his limits as a player and also understood that he was a very good but not great baseball player. He always said that the greatest honor outside of his family was to be a major league baseball player. He greatest thrill was not hitting 61 home runs in 1961 but to return to Yankee Stadium many years later to have his number retired. His numbers certainly don't warrant hall of fame honors but somewhere in the minds of those who control the haves and have nots in Cooperstown there should be exceptions to the rule. Maris was a credit to baseball because he did it the right way. Maybe the worse thing that ever happened in his career was hitting those 61 home runs. He, more than anyone else realized that he could never live up to those numbers no matter what he did from that season forward. People forget that Maris was an outstanding outfielder and had one of the greatest throwing arms of his generation. It's just not something people take the time to reflect upon. His closest friend Mickey Mantle often said that Roger's assault on Babe Ruth's 34 year old home run record was the greatest thing he ever saw in sports and I have to agree.

For the sake of baseball I think Roger Maris belongs in the hall of fame not so much for what he did in 1961 but for the decent human being that he was.

Yogi Berra, a 3-time American League MVP, played left field for the 1961 New York Yankees, platooning with outfielder Johnny Blancard. The Hall of Fame center fielder is another 3-time American League MVP, Mickey Mantle, who hit .298 lifetime and 536 homers despite horribly injuring his knee in Game 2 of the 1951 World Series against the New York Giants. Roger Maris was a great player and a two-time American League MVP, but all he has going for him is his two-year skein of MVP seasons, and his one truly great season of 1961, where he broke Babe Ruth's 34 year old single season home run record. Maris hit 61 home runs that year, topping Ruth's 60 home runs. It is debated by baseball historians, because Ruth and the rest of Major League Baseball played in eight fewer games, and at the pace he hit them, it was a near certainty he would hit 2 or 3 more home runs, giving him 62 or 63. He is already acknowledged for his fantastic 1961 season, but his statistics are not of Hall of Fame caliber. There are many players who had better career stats than a .260 career average and 275 home runs that never came close to becoming enshrined in the Hall of Fame, and he did not put up good enough numbers for a Hall of Fame plaque.

i have plenty of fav players that probably won't make the hall. Just because you don't make the Hall doesn't mean you're not worthy or shouldn't be respected. I hear people say that and it bugs me, so what if you didn't make the hall you can still have a heck of a career! I love Brian Roberts, I'm not officially an Os fan or anything (i do like watching them ^^) but he's a great leadoff hitter, always been consistent and an awesome second baseman!! He seems respectful and giving :)
