Each printer manufacturer and printer model use somewhat different cartridges. You need to know the brand and model number of your printer.
For example: Epson Model: 880
You will find cartridges of the same brand name (e.g. Epson) are very expensive. Mine cost: Black $28 + Color $26 = $54/pair
I buy mine from a web site and the Black is $1.25 and the Color is $2.25. I'm not kidding, there is that much difference in price.
I have been using this site for years and have never had a problem with any of the cartirdges they sell. They are brand new cartridges, not refilled, but are simply made by a company other than one contracted by Epson. I have 3 Epson printers and use these cartridges exclusively.
They have cartridges to fit all brands and models of printer so check them out. You just need a credit card to order online.

Hope this helps.

There is a specific type for each printer. Sometimes there is a "generic" type, but go to the store and check the specs book near the print cartridges.

no, you need to buy the brand of ink that your printer is. Example, HP Printers use HP Ink, etc.
you can go to any office supply website and use the ink wizard and serach your printer and it will come up with the right ink for the printer.

No, not any cartridge will fit any printer.
Take the empty cartridge in to your local computer/office supplies store and show somebody there, they can help you find the right replacement.
