A solute is any solid or gas which, when added to water or other liquid, will dissolve. Eg salt to water - salt is the solute, carbon dioxide gas to water to make soda water - gas is the solute.

Solution is the result of dissolving a solute in a solvent. Eg salt to water - the solution is the brine (salt water)

Solvent is the liquid in which the solute is dissolved. Eg water is the solvent in the salt water solution

So mixing salt and water - salt is the solute, water is the solvent, and brine (salt water) is the solution.
