I want to be a psychologist in the field of trauma victims, particularly rape, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, loss of a loved one, etc. I am a male and a junior in high school with excelent grades. I love helping people because when I help someone at an emotional level, it makes my own sense of self-worth (very low, actually) go up. I feel more important...somehow. Is this a good idea, or a particularly bad one, given the fact that people say I am easy to talk to and they trust me without question without knowing why?

Research the field. Ask others doing this why they chose the career. This will give you an idea of whether your reasons are lasting or insubstantial. Find out what kind of schooling this field requires, and how much demand there is for someone specializing in this. Explore all of the specializations of Psychology and discover if any of them would suit you better. You have a lot of time to really put a lot of thought and consideration into your career path and kudos to you for taking the initiative now.

Plain and simple, research research research, and be openminded about whatever your research yeilds.

I think its a good idea! I want to be the same thing and i fit your description.... except i am a girl..... and have low self esteam...... and maybe slightly older than you if you are not in 8th grade.... but what ever. I think it is a good idea but it is probly going to change. I am not saying it as a bad thing. it is good for change. in the passed week i have wanted to be a Police officer, Cook, teacher, and pyciatrist is my latest wanna-be. If you are going to highschool next year, and the deadline is not already up, you may want to check up schools with carreer academies and learning centers (cooking, law enforcement, NJROTC, science technology, ect.) and see if they have a pyciatry program in the highschool school system. Just be open minded with these schools, when you get into them you have to make sure this is what you want to do. I wish you good luck!

If you are in junior high school and you already know what you want to do with your life, I am very proud of you considering the mentality of many of your schoolmates. This I can say...your career should be something that is a passion and you know you will enjoy it. Otherwise it becomes a job and you become its slave.

I think you would make a great therapist. I will be praying for you.

sometimes, we really seem to like something at a particular moment. We really like it that we go to the extent of doing everything. We like it for reasons like: it gives us self-worth, it shows our strength. But sometimes, unconsciously, we liked the thing that we really like because we have nothing else to show. you said you view yourself as a person with low self-worth. Now, how can you talk/communicate with your patients if you refuse to communicate with yourself?

Being a psychologist is never easy. You are dealing with complicated minds. With great minds at that matter.

If you really want to be one, you first have to deal with yourself. Show yourself that you deserve the things that you want. That you have worth.

I can't really say if it's a good idea or not. BUt I can say you've got potentials.

Explore the world, do the absurd, be happy.... and make up your mind! Good Luck!

I like casp911's answer. It's not a bad thing to want to help people - if you can make a living off it, so much the better. I know what you mean about the boost you get from from helping out. I don't know where it comes from, but it's pretty real.

I think you actually made a pretty good case for yourself and conviced me! You could work as a social worker in any field, to help families, or a psychologist to help people deal with these issues. Hey, why not.
