I attend a well-known university in California, with a high Asian population. (It's either Stanford or Berkeley.) Many of them are "fobs" as in fresh off the boat Asians.

I am half Taiwanese aboriginese, and half Caucasian. I guess I have tanner skin than most Chinese people, at least that's what they keep telling me. Basically people think I have Southeast Asian blood rather than Northern Asian, and these Asians keep commenting on my skin color, etc. What's up with this?

They want to be like Americans, yet I've lived in America my entire life, and no American has ever made comments about my skin color or incessantly asked me what my heritage is. I find it somewhat offensive. Plus they always comment on my "big eyes" and make remarks about that...it's just irritating. It's just odd that they want to imitate Americans, yet while Americans want tan skin, they bleach their skin...what's up with this? And why this obsession?

Poster 1: Stupid, maybe, but it's true. Fobs really are like this, esp. at my university.

Spreet...lol, I see that here too. It's weird because I used to live in Washington, which makes California a huge culture shock.

With Asians, we have a saying "yi bai zhe san chou", which means that pale skin can hide imperfections. That's why we all wanna be as pale as possible.
And Taiwan aboriginals are originally tanned.

B/C America is obsessed with being TAN.
Tan is considered beautiful and healthier looking by many in the US. Which is ironic b/c we have one of the highest SKIN CANCER rates in the world!!
In other countries they value natural beauty more...also being tan can be assoc. with working in the hot sun (which means you are prob. not wealthy) SO the rich and beautiful DONT want to be tan.
Your white and tan.
OK
They are Asian.
Due to cultural differences we all have different opinions...
It's like Paris Hilton VS. Nicole Kidman beauty.
One's timeless one's trendy....

The reason why pale skin is so popular in countries such as Korea, China and Japan is because it represents your social class. The lighter skinned you are it means you are wealthier. Darker skin means you work outside in the rice patty fields or doing labor work under the sun. Just like the Geisha paints the face white to show class and prestige.
Also Korea, China, and Japan find the Thai, and Vietnamese people to be of lower class and they tend to have dark skin and would hate to be mistaken for one of them.

for asians alot of people LOVE big eyes and pale skin. I dont think that they want to imitate americans though. Chinese have been liking pale skin and big eyes way way back in the day.
