You shouldn't borrow for Christmas. The Angel Tree from the Salvation Army is a good idea or check on some other charities. I know that your pride may not want to go that route, but as a person who works in the nonprofit industry, we much rather give to families like yours than those who are chronically in need (i.e. don't want to work).

If push comes to shove, just explain your situation to the kids. Remind them that the real gift is having each other and do a Christmas project like feeding the homeless on Christmas Day.

It will really help put things in perspective. I know it may sound corny but, I grow up in a poor but loving family. As an adult, I remember little about the gifts I received but, I will always cherish the love and lessons my parents shared with me.

I'd suggest not doing the loan -- the first rule of holes is that if you're in one, you stop digging and throw out the shovel!

I'd go to various agencies. For instance, the Salvation Army might have some ideas, as would Toys for Tots.

One should NEVER borrow for Christmas, even if they have good credit!
