I mean it just seems kind of pointless. Why not just let us answer the questions and be done with it.

It is a goal for the person and a hook for the site. People come back a lot of times because of it and I agree with calla_flower's statement about best answer percentages. There should at least be a leaderboard based where they have sections for highest percentage based on how many questions answered but they should separate it where one is for chosen by asker percentage and the other is chosen by voters percentage if at least 20 people voted.

i think it's easy for the spirit of the point system to get lost because people begin to look at it as a competition instead. points show that an individual has answered many questions, however it doesn't readily tell you the quality of that persons answers. there are some people with high points but low best answer percentages. unless you go to their profile you wont be able to see how many best answers they had. it would be good if they could sort by best answer % instead of by points.
