I dressed up as Santa so my son could catch me in the act of putting presents out. He and my wife watched from the doorway of his bedroom. Worked like a charm...

I don't think it takes that much effort to convince children to believe in Santa Claus. Younger minds are not capable of analyzing things from a rational or scientific manner, so they accept that some chubby man in a red suit magically flew through the air and visited every single (Christian) house in the world in one evening, pulling toys out of his bag and leaving them for every boy and girl.

Now as for creative ways to recreate the spirit and Christmas and the magic of Santa Claus, there are plenty of ways to do that, but I think the simplest are best: singing Christmas carols, reading "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" dramatically just before bed time, and baking cookies together.

When they're old enough to start questioning magic as an explanation for things that occur in their lives and in the universe, they're usually ready to accept that Santa Claus is a myth and that that's ok. As an atheist, I have no problem with revealing the facts of life to children a little at a time through the years, waiting for children themselve to question things before you guide them to more rational explanations. And I have no problem with fantasy, fun, and the "spirit" of Christmas or the story of Santa Claus, in its own time and place.

I have two Kids and there is a Santa Claus and they know it. He is not in the Red and White costume in the mall. He is a spirit that helps others to joy and happiness. The reason people dress in the stores is because of him. The reason people give gifts is because of Him. The real meaning of Christmas is love and family and if you have that in your heart you know there is a Santa Claus.

My Dad used to dress up and come to our school performance. I didn't realize it was my father for quite a few years. I have a friend who said her parents did a major Christmas ritual which involved her dad stomping around on the roof .

We don't even have a tree anymore. I miss it.
I love the lights and decoration. We need it this time of year, especially up north.

I won't lie to my kids, nor do anything so dramatic to make them believe this lie. Santa will be a "fun" story, just like all the other fairytales. I'll never threaten them with Santa ("if you're not good, Santa won't bring you any presents!"), as it corrupts their morals and presents them with needless guilt and fear ("he's watching everything you do!"). Never mind the betrayal one discovers when they find out the people they trusted so dearly have lied to and tricked them. Typically, made fools of them.

The "idea" of Santa is fun--deceiving you're children is not.
