Since these are diatomic molecules, you have to refer to them as "gas" . All the diatomic molecules are : H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, At2.
But yes, you just call them by their names.

N2 is called dinitrogen. It has a two because it is one of the 8 diatomic elements that is found in pairs. When N is present in a formula with other elements then it is called nitrogen because it is only found in pairs when it is alone.

Seems odd, doesn't it, that O and O2 are oxygen. Really they are an atom (O) and a molecule (O2), however, science type people just know, and . . . yup, they are called . . . well, just as you stated in your question.
