It doesn't have to be totally silent, but quiet enough so that it won't disrupt a classroom.

Make a box to go around it to absorb the noise, like they use for the blenders at coffee shops, with a hole for the pencil to go in.

You don't have to build one if you just buy some mechanical ones like these:

I never understood why they had such loud sharpeners in classrooms, those are cheaper and quiet and multiple kids can sharpen at once. (I remember having to wait in line.)

Just make sure they're decent quality.

Use a small acid bath, like weak hydrochloric, to loosen the wood material surrounding the graphite core.

After letting it soak for several minutes (to the depth you want to expose the graphite), simply remove the pencil and wipe away the now-loosened wood pulp.

If you do this correctly, you can also add to your stock of papier-mache supplies at the same time!

And believe me ... there's absolutely NO NOISE.

Smother it with a pillow.

What gives? Just get a mechanical pencil.

Somebody must have too many accumulated points.

Enclose the sharpener in an air tight enclosure. Connect a vacuum pump and remove the air. Viola!

Build it inside a vacuum. Sound does not travel in a vacuum, it would be totally silent. But you will have to fight my patent if you want to market this beauty!

I think you need to place an electric pencil sharper in a remote place so that it doesn't disturb the other students .
