It's an amazing book. Many people say that the whole series is about an "orphan boy learns he has a secret powerful heritage" but what about Harry Potter? An amazing best seller, it's simply about a well written classic, and the spider? Was that not from Tolkien?
The thing is, Paloni can write. It doesn't matter what he writes, but he can write better than most of you can, better than I can, and even if his parents published it, it's a #1 bestseller (randomhouse.com) which is due to his writing, not to his parents.
Being less than 30, he has accomplished more than some 90 year olds in the literary field. An amazing book!

To be blunt and honest, if your into literature, and really did like the Lord of the Rings series, or the Dragon Riders of Pern series, then you aren't missing much..
The book's author used a number of ideas that are similar to that of J.R.R Tolkien and Anne McCaffrey. Quiet honestly, the books were bad in comparison.
First, when ever he described his characters it seemed lacking, instead of putting movements in the details (ex: the wind blew threw his copper brown lochs, tugging playfully at the partly curled roots) he seemed to freeze them (ex: Eragon had copper hair.). He never seemed to describe the setting when the characters were moving in it, which is similar to how he freezed the character. My favorite one would have to be this: The Urgal ran towards Eragon, then paused so the author could give a description.
You see, the author never explained to what the Urgal looked like a head of time, like in the book it just said 'the Urgal looked at Eragon' instead of something like 'the mutalated, ugly beast turned it's blood splattered face towards Eragon. A roar escaped from it's throat, revealing saliva covered fangs'. Instead, it seemed like the monster was frozen as the author talked about how it's fur was... Furry. Or whatever Urgals have.He didn't put a lot of movements in the descriptions.
Then, there were a few random sentences that didn't belong in the book that were inserted. Ex: 'The wind hit Eragon's face, the wind came from the north. Ogres lived in the North. Sand stung Eragon's eyes.'
The plot line is similar to Lord of the Rings, and Dragon Riders of Pern, I mean I'm amazed it actually wasn't pushed at court. There are so many similarities between the two that it's not even funny. (Ex: Eragon and Aragorn from J.R.R Tolkiens books are very similar, dark colored hair, body builds, and over all appearance. While Arya and Arwen are both elves with dark brown hair, determined attitudes, and pretty good fighters and horse riders, plus they know magic.) In the movies, Eragon and Arya both had to have different color of hair (Eragon got lighter brown hair, while Arya became a blonde and had no elf ears) so that people wouldn't instantly imagine Aragorn and Arya when they saw it.
The whole plot is predictable, and no characters were very promising or had very much depth, except for one. The only promising character was Martagh who suddenly became really predictable.
I mean, my sister had just finished the first book and I had finished the second book. I told her one simple thing 'Eragon had a brother' and instantly, she knew who it was. Why? Because, she's read a number of books with similar plot lines and 'twists' as Eragon and Eldest have. Alas, after a few to many times they don't become 'twists' they just become the same old boring 'turns' as they usually did.
Honestly, if you were not to read the books, you are not missing much. The writing sucks, and so does the binding. My book, I bought it brand new and I treat my books well, fell apart with in a week.
My last rave: The books wouldn't have gotten published, unless his parents owned a printing press and created a few copies and sold them in the neighborhood bookstore. If he were to propose the idea to a publishing company they would've laughed at him and turned him down. The only reason they are published is because some author found the book read it, and had it published.
So, the book is far from original, or fantastic. It's boring. It's lame. And it's totally predictable. The only reason I read them is to finish off the series and I want to see how Murtagh and the werecat dies.

I'm about halfway through the first book, and I like it so far. Many of my students really love the books. Impressive writing for a 15 year old.

Depends. If you like books like King Fortis the Brave and Harry Potter, you'll probably like Eragon. If you don't like fantasy, you probably won't.

It's a great book if you're into fantasy books, it has depth and complex characters and great action scenes and its a book you can vividly see in your mind while you're reading it.

If you like magic and elves and dragons and stuff like that, it is a brilliant book.If you like historical fiction, you might or might not like it. if you like nonfiction, definitly no. I enjoyed it, and the book after it, Eldest, was just as good if not better, and I recommend it.
