As soon as the rest of us original "hippies" are all dead and gone, you so know there will be an onslaught of "copy-cats" to take our places!!!

No.

We've never really had a decade since the 60's & 70's when some poor misguided group hasn't at least tried to dig up those dry bones in hopes of seeing some life there, but future attempts at hippy bliss will end - as have all the attempts to date - as flatly as all the other attempts.

I have a few ideas as to why this period in history cannot be duplicated. First off, the baby boomers were the last generation to have a direct tie with an overall consciousness and sense of who they were as Americans. There was a strong sense of God and country - mostly in that order - that the young people were striking out to buck against. The lines of what it means to be an American aren't as clearly defined anymore as they were then.

So, in a sense, the hippies were told who they were, they said they didn't want to be that. Now we have a hodge-podge of all sorts of beliefs and ideologies - more so than this country did in the 60's & 70's.

So anyone attempting to buck against a belief system is, first, having to identify a belief system to buck against in the 21st century. So that's one obstacle. Another obstacle is, most people find out pretty quickly in trying to mobilize a war cry of rebellion against some belief system - whether real or imagined - find out that no one really gives a rip like they did when the baby boomers were growing up. Everybody's seen it all, heard it all, and so it blows over as quickly as it begins.

Yes, hippies were really good people, that were concerned about the well being of the environment and animals. Today people are so materialistic I think hippies could teach peopel a lot today

I think there already are. Not in the same way as the 60s. Obviously, with Aids and diseases, free love is not possible. But pot use is on the rise again, according to a cnn poll I just saw a few weeks ago.
But the fashions are coming back, and it seems like I see a lot of greasy looking unkept hairdos on today's youth.
