I've noticed that in a lot of online forums, people throw the term "troll" around a lot. Now today I just got called one. I am offended and I don't even know why because I don't know what it means! lol Please someone...enlighten me! Thanks!

It means someone who goes to messageboards and chats to post obnoxious or controversial opinions just to try to get people riled up. If the first people won't bite, they'll just keep up with rude or insulting remarks until they find someone who "bites" and starts arguing back. They don't usually even believe what they're saying. They just like getting people upset.

Responding to trolls is called "feeding the troll" or "feeding the energy creature" and people will write: dftt or dftec (don't feed the troll/energy creature.)

It means your question is just an attempt to get a rise out of people, rather than really wanting an answer.

"Don't feed the troll" is a typical response to a trolling question.

Being a troll means you're just posting to start an argument, or deliberately being annoying or asking a dumb, meaningless and obviously fake question.
