I've never tried the Mr. Clean eraser.....
I use Fantastic on the normal fingerprints and smudges. For walls that are really bad, I spray with Dow Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner, then wipe the walls with a damp mop.
I had to do this to an apartment I moved into with cigarette-stained walls (landlord refused to paint) and it worked great!

The Mr Clean erasers work great to spot clean. But if more than that needs cleaning, then use Simple Green and hot water.

a little bleach, a little dish soap, and a sponge mop. Just mop the walls the way you'd mop a floor. A neat trick to cover bad wall with out painting, buy some cheap flat sheets with a color or pattern you like. Then thumbtack them to the wall, but keep the sheets taunt. If you do it right it looks good. Buy flat thumbtacks that match the sheets. Or why can't you just repaint the wall in the color they already are?
