no, the new type lamps (light bulbs) dont put out the heat that is used by incandescent type light bulbs. the rating for the lamp is used basically for the wiring inside the fixture. the smaller and/or the type of wire dictates the heat that can be safely absorbed. i think you are safe.

Before you go to far Watts is the power a things uses.
BTU is heat that thing gives off.
The base of the 100 watt lumen puts off so much heat (BTU).
The 40 watt bulb puts off so much heat (BTU).
Test the temperature of both with something.
If it is a hanging lamp their probably more worried about the small rubber covered wires inside the lamp melting then shorting out, other then catching something around it on fire.
You may get away with a 60 watt lumen or even a 150 watt one if you can get it in the lamp.
But test the temperature first.

Curly bulbs,as I call them, are completely safe. They are also wicked money savers. You should convert all your traditional bulbs to curly bulbs and watch your electricity bill go down. You can safely put a 100 watt bulb in a lamp that only permits 40 watts or less. You can hold the bulb in your hand after it's been on for awhile without burning yourself.Try doing that with a traditional bulb.

I wouldn't worry about a fire hazzard on the lamp, but the wiring in the lamp may not be able to carry the additional load. This could lead to blowing some internal fuse, to melting insulation off the wire and potentially shocking yourself. I'd stick to the 40's or shop for a new lamp.

Never Use anything but the recommended watts for your lamps. I believe any bulb could start a fire if the wiring has a short.
