They are both elapids (I believe that coral snakes are the only elapids in North America) but they look so different. I saw a coral snake here in Florida by the way. Trust me, they would not make for good pets. They are twitchy, nervous, and they try to avoid humans.

That is because although their Genus is in the same family as cobras, the species is different and adapted to a different environment. Cobra's are camoflauged to fit in witht he grass of their native lands and their hood is the wayt hey advertize their deffenses. Coral snakes are very small in size so they advertize thier potency with vivid colors so that predators leave them alone. They dont have a problem with catching prey because their poisons act so quickly.

Humans are all the same species, but we don't all look alike, do we now?

A lot of animals that are closely related look nothing alike. That's just nature.

Think about it you and your family are related but you don't all look the same and have the same habits and personalities. same with animals including snakes.
