I've grown garlic for years. As others have stated, it is hardy and easy to grow. Remember Michelle's note on which way and how to set in ground.

You didn't say what part of the country you're in.
Here in SE Georgia, USA, I'd still be okay to set garlic; harvest time will be early Summer/late Spring; [tho, admittedly, 1-2mos ago would have been primetime for planting].

See if you have any neighbors who grow garlic and will give you a couple of cloves. If you have a agricultural publication [free] like we do here, many people advertise having cloves.

I plant garlic around Roses to ward off bugs.

You break the bulb into the separate pieces and put them in the ground. Look a the bulb before you break it up. Bottom has roots, top is pointy. Plant like that. But get organic, not regular grocery store kind b/c the regular grocery store kind sometimes is treated w/ a growth inhibitor so that it does not readily grow. If you have a veggie garden, it is good to plant garlic around tomatoes to keep the bugs away.

Garlic is very easy to grow but the problem is that the season is LONG. Too late for this year but you might try it.

Ideally plant it in early September and harvest in June. Just punch little one inch holes in the ground and put the garlic in. Then water it if you remember to. They're pretty hardy.

Good luck.
