Yeah I need to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop because my laptop isn't working and im not able to install windows again because the CD-ROM isn't working either. I don't want to lose the data on laptop. So if I get the USB thing and the external case that should work fine?

I am assuming you want to transfer files from your laptop to your desktop? You can do this over a network, via a crossover cable. You can buy a Cat-5 crossover cable at most stores. As for physically mounting your laptop's hard drive in a desktop case? Not exactly. Laptops use 2.5 inch hard drives, and dekstops use 3.5 inch. Though technically it can be done with special adapters, the connecters on hard drives were not designed to be pluged and unpluged all the time. You can buy a USB hard drive case at newegg.com, or on ebay, that will let you use a laptop hard drive as a USB device, but again, you dont want to be connecting and disconnecting the hard drive all the time. For transferring files, a 10 dollar crossover cable is the cheapest and easiest way to transfer alot of information very easily.
Hope this helps

if your talking about removing it from the laptop and installing it the in the desktop. Hard to do, if possible at all. However if you purchase a USB HDD case for laptop drives you'll be able to plug it in via a USB port.

Unfortunately it is not possible, because the speed is different, the size of the laptops HDD is smaller, the only one kind I know is the ulra small form desktops which basicly uses parts from laptops.

You sure can - but you have to pull the HDD out of your laptop first, then you can get a 2.5" external enclosure for it.

statik_24 has the right idea. I am a technician in a company and do it all the time when we get hd issues (or system issues in general). Do a search for notebook harddrive adapters on google or yahoo and you'll find TONNES of them for under $15.

Good luck! Message me if you need extra help!
