Its been around in one form or another for hundreds of years yet its still so popular to play, and fun I may add.
I honestly can't think of another thing that has stood the test of time than Chess.

i happen to be a master of this game and i only lose to chess programs
never to people
it has been around since 204bc when Han Xin a chinese military leader invented it to give his troops something to do during winter encampment

from there came japenese chess known as "shogi" as well as chinese chess
there are also variations suchas hebrew chess which isnt nearly as popular
the best chess is "western chess"the variant that is commonly played all over the world
the one we all know and love

"Greatest game" would be a matter of opinion. Chess is certainly one of the most popular games in the Western world and has remained popular and challenging after so much careful study that it has to be up there. On the other hand, Go has been around for the better part of 4,000 years, is perhaps the most popular game in the East, and has remained challenging over time as well.

It sure has a long & wonderful history. It may have lost popularity in the mainstream, but it has not yet been bested by man or machine. The champions of the 20th century are revered by even novices. The game Go might have something to say about that

Yes, because it involves your brain 100%. All other games require thinking as well but you will need some luck to win like in poker, chess there is no luck, you win if you know how to play.

There are English Chess & Chinese Chess, but both have the same terget; we have to apply different strategies to conquer different problems, it's also let us think so to exercise our thinking logic, etc. This can lead to help us think logically & practically.

actually chess is not the original game it is a derivative of the ancient egyptian and roman game of goa

but in any case it is neat that there are about 400000 ways to win but all you need is smarts to play and win

Chess is up there with the greatest of all time, in my opinion too....

Carrum Board and Mahjong are also pretty timeless
