Yes, you do have to dress up. I mean, won't it be strange if you're the only one showing up in black leggings and a pink and grey striped minidress while everyone else is suited up? I suggest you were a comfortable, but pretty blue silk dress. Make sure it has lacy lining, but it's not totally seventeen century. There so has to be some modern cool in it! I know of a great dress I found at Shopzilla - it's called a Mary L Couture Bias Cut Charmeuse Gown with Godets. It's so classy and elegant, at the same time casual enough. You can wear it not only at an opera, but perhaps even to a dinner party or wedding!

Well since the opera is usually reserved for the elite, they tend to dress up and as such you see most people kind of formal at these things. Just wear a nice dress or pant suit. I wouldn't go in a gown, I think that is a little too formal, so knee or calf length is good enough. If you have a little black dress that's the type of occasion it comes in handy.

something CLASSY. Not a lot of skin showing. A below the knee dress would be appropriate.

I'm sure you'll see people in all varieties of clothing from jeans to VERY very dressed up. I'd stay away from jeans. It's a night out on the town, wear something nice!

Im going to the ballet in London later on this month and Im a bit stumped as well, although I have been told if its a Matinee ( a performance in the afternoon) its more of a casual/smart look, so jeans/nice top/smart jacket. I think the evening performances are more dressy so prob a nice little black wrap dress, heels, etc.

MOST people will be dressed up, as if, maybe, they're going to a wedding; some go overboard w/furs and jewels, some dress (fewer) like they came from the gutter, people wear knee-length or longer (no one goes in a mini), heels -- high, low (just make sure you can walk in em) velvet capes, velvet clothes, dress clothes, dress coats, fancy things, just plain pretty things--put together an outfit you really like and have fun. P.S. Don't fall asleep. (I once did...was sooooo boring!)

its getting more and more casual theses days - you will prob. see a range from jeans to formal dresses. I say dress up like youre going to a nice restaurant, like a nice skirt or dress and enjoy looking fabulous! unless you break out the ball gown you won't be overdressed.

Yes, formal evening wear if you really want to look nice. Wear any length dress, skirt, or evening pants are very nice.
