You have 8 sweets and there are 4 people to divide them between. So you divide the total number of sweets ( 8 ) by the number of people ( 4 )You have to find out how many 4`s there are in 8 that is called dividing . There are two fours in eight, so the people have two sweets each.

Well, say you are trying to figure out 12 divided by 4.
Division is really showing how many items are in a pile if there are a certain number of items split into a certain number of equal piles.
Find any bag of small items (such as Skittles) and take out 12. Split them into 4 equal piles and count the number of Skittles. In this case, there are 3 in each pile, so 12 divided by 4 is 3.
If you want to make this faster, get a copy of a division table and memorize them. Later you will be able to recall divisions easily.

Can I do it with sweets? (that's how I learnt, I'm not trying to patronise you!) You have 100 sweets and 4 friends, you want to divide your sweets equally between all of you, that is your 4 friends and yourself, making 5 people.
____
5) 100
So, go along the units - 5 into 1, doesn't go, 5 into 10 makes 2 (2 x 5 = 10) so you put your 2 above the 1st 0, and then 5 into 0 makes 0, so it makes 20.
__20__
5) 100
Is that ok? E-mail me if you want me to go over it a bit more, karen_mjohn@yahoo.co.uk

I don't know how old you are, but if you are in School now, I bet you would have been taught the 'grouping' method.
Think - ' groups of'...
Imagine 62 smarties....If you are sharing them between 4 people, how many will each have..
62
- 40 ..... 4 x 10 (4 groups of 10 smarties,
___ each person has 10 so far...)
22 (left)
- 20 ....... 4 x 5 ( 4 groups of 5 smarties)
____
2 left over
So the answer is 15 smarties for each person, Remainder 2
For an alternative - far better explanation, with moving pictures - try

Long division algorithms are based on iterative correction.
That is, x/y is done by finding an approximate answer q1.
The real answer is q=x/y=q1+correction.
So correction = [x - y*q1]/y.
I assume you already know how to subtract and multiply and add.
So now, after making your guess q1, you do * and - and you've
reduced the problem of finding the correction to a SIMPLER
division problem (simpler because x-y*q1 is smaller than x,
at least if your guess was at all decent). So now you do the simpler problem by making a guess q2, and so on. The final answer is
q1+q2+q3+...
where it either goes on forever, or stops because some guess was exact and so did not need to be corrected (which tends to happen
when it gets simple enough - then easy to write exact answer)
or stops because you got tired and decided you have enough accuracy already.

I doubt that anyone who writes that 'it (division) was explained in school' understood the process...
division is only 'obvious' for someone who doesn't understand how it works...
