I mean, I have dreads, but I refused to get them until I graduated college and had a job. Many employers don't hire employees with "ethnic" hairstyles, especially in corporate America. Why on job interviews do people not want to wear dress shoes or wear their pants sagging? Can't we figure out that if we have a pair of tennis shoes for every outfit to the club we should have double that number for something to help define success with us? Why can't we realize that there is one look for hanging out and another for working? Why have another reason for people not to hire you?

Because forcing blacks to change their hair to fit "Anglo" standards is ignorant and indirect racism. It's not cheap or easy for blacks, especially women, to manage their hair, to keep it straight, and generally cornrolls, etc last a long time and don't require much managment. And it's representative of African American, or other black ethnic cultures which should be respected and not put down. A person can appreciate their own ethnic heritage in whichever ways they want and be a professional business person as well. If employers are not able to look past this, they do not have very good priorities. It's not very much different than turbans, hijabs, skullcaps, yarmulkes or any other ethnic hairstyles. However, business aren't very likely to change, so if you feel like you might be discriminated against because of your appearance, than either conform, or be prepared for discrimination.

It's because it is more convenient and stylish; that's why we choose to change our hair styles instead of the straight, bangs over the forehead look. Is that okay with you?

Why are you asking so many questions about one race when other cultures commit the same professional dress violations? Are you hiring? You define success by wearing a hair style you know nothing about? Then you want to worry about what shoes to wear because YOU have too many sneakers that YOU wear to the clubs? Who are the WE you are talking about? Why waste time worrying about how other people might not "get the job" and get one yourself!

Well to answer your question about the dreads, braids, cornrolls, etc. We have nappy unmanageable hair. The easy thing to do is braid it up. Most black women wear weaves and wigs. You have no idea how hard it is to keep nappy hair looking decent. It is usually too short to style properly, and doesn't look attrative short. Women are suppose to have long beautiful hair. Braids provide a long term style that doesn't require daily care and saves money. Until you have nappy hair don't complain about what people do with it.

The sagging pants is just a fad. I remember when the headbangers had baggy pants. Just like any fad it will fade.

i like the two organic and comfortable types. i do unlike specific weaves (tracks)- the variety while that is sewed in so cheesy and you are going to be able to verify the string (some mess that somebody have been given executed on a front porch or while they are in bright, obnoxious rainbow colorations. Weaves can seem good professionally executed and are heavily aligned to the guy's organic hair texture.

I don't understand about the hair but the clothing in Corp Amer. there is a profressionality (if thats even a word but it sounds good to me) that needs to be established. Almost the same reason hollywood needs to wear their prada and gucci it's almost necessary.

Usually, that is too long for me. I consider it depends on the guy as well as his face though. Certain guys can easily pull off long hair and other people can't.

why should i have to compromise my heritage to make someone else like me? That is like saying hey i cant hire anyone with blond hair. That is crapping on their heritage. We want black people to be proud of their roots and culture but only if it it's in a relaxer..
