Actually, this is a two part reaction:

1. 2Na + H2O -> Na2O + H2

2. Na2O + H2O -> 2NaOH

The heat evolved will cause the hydrogen to explode...The "smoke" seen in the reaction is Na2O..
I do this demo for my classes each year.
