The Vin Number will tell you the year but to get the production date you can look on the b-pillar which is the middle pillar usually and it should say MM/YY (eg 09/05) The exact day would be stretching it a little too far considering all you need to get parts and such is the month and year. That's only for cars that were changed a little bit midway through the production year by the manufacturer. If you go to about.com it will tell you which number is which on the VIN # but older cars' VIN's are different because they changed over to the current ones in the 80's I believe.

Check the manufacture web site as they often have a vin number translator or go to a auto parts store with your vin number or the dealer.

Since VINs were standardized, the 10th digit is the year model. No month of manufacture is available by VIN.
Since you have a '97 Subaru Legacy, look on the driver's door post. There is generally a tag there showing month on manufacture.
