Citrus seems to help curb cravings. Keeping lemon slices or orange slices handy, to bite into when the cravings get really bad helps. Also, go to quitnet.org.

I quit 5 years ago using the patch and never looked back. I kept a daily diary of how I felt and the mild to strong urges lasted only 3 weeks for me. The urges were GREATLY reduced with the patch. I slept with the patch on. The side effects for me were very colorful animated dreams but I dealt with it. My wife did not sleep with the patch and she had a little harder time. At work, I kept a color print out of an actual cancerous lung in my cube. When I had an urge, I would look at it. I really wanted to quit and it sounds like you do too. You will do great with the patch. Just realize that the urges will go away. The dreams you have a year later of you smoking will make you mad though. I still get one once in a great while. Hope this helps.

I would get back into an old hobby. I love to needlepoint.
I am sure you can find something hobby or distraction. You could always take a walk in the woods-not in Oregon... where you could never get a cigarette.
You can think about how many wonderful nights you will have not coughing and maybe be able to live a little longer. I quit but Asthma made me.
It was easy- the hospital or a cigarette.
Congratulations and go for it. If you blow it then just start over again. Be Proud of yourself for taking the first steps and then see how much help you need from either people or medicine.

People who have never smoked say, Take a walk, Chew Gum, etc. As someone who has been smoking for about 20 years, I was able to quit once for 6 months. I went cold turkey, and it was hard. I started again after some new stress came into my life, but I would like to quit again.

I will never do the patch, because it keeps you addicted to nicotine. I would rather suffer for 2 weeks from the chemical withdrawal than drag it out for 6 months or longer.

The highest success rate for quitters is cold turkey. Quit buying them, and quit putting them in your mouth, period. It's very hard to do, but anyone who is really serious won't mess with patches and gums.

Have a friend punch you in the arm, or the face if you prefer, when you want a cigarette. Than you won't touch it because you get punched. It brings up negative feelings. Or my grandma used sunflower seeds if that sounds better to you. Or smoke American spirits with no nicotine, to try and get off nicotine.
