Route 66 went from Chicago to Los Angeles. When California "caught on" after World War II, that was the route of choice. So a little bit of romance surrounded the road to warm weather and Hollywood.

That romance turned up in a song or two and the television series. I think you could argue that it became the most famous road in America at that time, passing the Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30, I believe).

Let's face it -- it's tough to write a song about an Interstate.

All the replies before mine are justified. I feel what made it popular was the TV program starring Todd and Buzz and a beautiful Corvette. What was taunted as Route 66, was partly filmed elsewhere. Each episode always brought you to the point of never knowing what was over the hill.

Sorry to say that the Interstate system left Route 66 in some places in despair, some even impassable.

If it had not have been for that TV program, my high school buddy and I would probably never have seen outside of Tennessee. He had the "Vette", and I had the resources. We made the trip! But, we didn't have any of the experiences that Buzz and Todd had. Still we had a joyous summer after graduation.

Why is it historic? Because during the Oklahoma Dust Bowl days it was the route that they used to migrate to California. The Stock Market had crashed, nothing was worth anything, and all the farmland was swept up into the air until the sky was black. They hit Route 66 to California, like the book, Grapes of Wrath.

Before the Interstate System was built, US Highway 66 ran from the east coast to the west coast of the United States. It was also the title of a TV program.

As the song says ... "you get your kicks on route 66"! It was the first coast to coast, paved, multi-lane interstate highway.
