It is not certain where Camelot is located, however there are several potential sites in England and Wales. Possibilities include Cadbury Castle, Colchester and Caerwent.
If Camelot meant Castle of the Hammer (King Arthur's Castle) then any place where he held a base could would have been considered Camelot.

Aurthurian legend had always been set in 'modern times' (or rather, just BEFORE modern times). The myths were living growing things, so the authors always set them in a time and place where the society and cyulture of the tales would make sense. Since most of the authors were medieval, so were the tales. Each new author brought forth a new idea suitable for the times that they were writing. After Malory (the last medieval author to take up the tales) they became static. Always set in the middleages of some variety. If there were an historical Arthur, he likely would've lived in the year 550 AD or so. Existing in the power vacuum left by the Roman Empire when Briton was without a singular ruler and feeling the pressure from the Picts, Scots, Irish raiders, and most notably the invading Saxons.
