Athlete is usually a designation for a player that had good stats in several categories. The player usually played offense and defense in high school at a skill position. They maybe played corner back and WR. Maybe returned kicks and alos played RB. It is a player that teams may recruit as a RB or WR or CB or Safety. In short an all around player and athlete.

its short for ATHLETE
it means the player will not have a specific skill position but is very athletic and can play a few. most often these players play on special teams as kick off and punt returners. theyre generally fast and agile.
