First connect your laptop to the router via ethernet cable. Open a browser to 192.168.1.1 The password is "admin" From here you can set up a secure network, register your mac adddress with your router, and configure DHCP to automaticly assign IP addresses to any other computer you may want to use on your network.
Be sure to change the default "linksys" network name to something more inconspicuous, and change the default router password when you are done configuring.

All you have to do is connect the Ethernet port of the modem to the In port on the router, and it'll start broadcasting wirelessly. You'll need to log into the web interface for your router and set up some security, your SSID, etc., but your router manual will tell you how to do this.

Rather than using the 'Internet' port on the Linksys to connect to your modem, try using one of the standard LAN ports instead. I used that method last time I used the WRT54GS
