since the winner receives half, just double $6,000.
you don't even need the information about the runner up but just for some more information, he receives $1,500.

Are you serious about this? You want to know the total prize offering and you already know that the 1st place award of $6,000.00 was 1/2 of the total? If half of the total amount is $6,000.00, then the entire amount was $12,000.00. The second runner up's prize is irrelevant to the question!

Well, if the winner won half of the money, then you know that the total amount of money is twice that, right? The other part is just a distraction (assuming you worded the question properly).
