Its a complicated question. so it is going to need a complicated answer. And it has endless discussion about it. Try reading philosophy books, specially God philosophy (the one that studies God and every thing about It). But from my point of view: it is because there are so many things around us that doesn't make sense, the one thing that can make all of those make sense is the existance of that greater being. No its not a "run away from your problem" solution. Many doesn't believe because the prove that God exist doesn't supported by science point of view.
They say science prove the opposite of that. According to them, science is the only way to prove anything, but they forgot that science is based on something, something that everybody accept it even it cannot be proven, its called theorem. Theorem is a basic of science, you have to believe it first so you can understand many things in science. Exp: why 1+1 = 2? because you accept the theorems about +, = and number. You don't ask why = is true if the right side is equal or same to the left side, you accept it is true for that condition than you can say it is true 1+1 = 2.
So who said that believe in God because of faith is Sucks, they sucks too because they believe in science is also based on faith called theorems.
so that the suggestion for the answer of your main question.
And for "why cant we just be and live as animals, in tribes and through nature, sustaining life like the rest of the ecosystem?" because we have mind, thought, imagination. for the "why cant we see the way we live is destroying our very existance?", because the way we think is "Yes may be now its destroying our very existance but latter we must find a way to solve that problem. but for now it is the best way to expand life, so why don't we do it?".
And for the rest of the question the answer is: It is Not! We based our action on something we believe as a basic theorem or faith.
For the last question: because usually the thing we have thought has become our basic faith. So to become the "just go with what we feel" type you have to reprogram your mind, and believe me its not that hard.

Great question.
It has always been my belief that some people need to rely on some higher being, to help them cope with their own existence. Some people use religion as a way to do that. Is it wrong? No not really, some people use religion just as a guidance for the way they act in their lives. Sounds like the same thing to me.
We do realize that the way we live destroys our planet, we have proven that to ourselves. At the same time though, we are so technologically inclined that we must test the outer limits of our imaginations just to see what we can actually achieve.
If you prefer to live more in a tribe setting, I suggest you check out some countries in Africa, numerous people are very content living on the limited resources that they have there.

Because thousands of years ago on the advent of human intelligence and societal formation, animisim was the form of religion. It was the first form, and is still existent today. As societies grew, so did the need to keep those societies together. A way to keep people together was fear. People were afraid of things they could not explain, and to explain those things, we used religion, i.e. animisim. So religion became a societal control tool. This can be seen in every society-EVERY. Shamans and witch doctors, the pope, churches of medieval europe, the native american cultures, and on and on-every culture is led by religious figures. Even today, america is led by religous dogma. It has lost a face, but is a cultural entity leading us. It is not that we have to seek a greater being, but that we do as a developemnt of society throughout the ages.

You're right! My opinion is this: People don't want to feel responsible or alone. If they believe that "God wanted this" they can feel better about a death., if they say "Dear God, I'm so sad" they can feel like someone is listening. Can you think of a better situation? A being who just listens, and protects? I think the reason people believe this is because we have a feeling that animals do not~the ability to love, but what comes with that is the need to be loved. We also have the ability to imagine. We can make up whatever we want. We can imagined we are eternally loved by some protecting all-knowing being.
Doesn't that feel good to you?
Some people are not happy enough with their life or life choices that they have the need to believe in fairy tales.

Some people don't seek a higher being, and many who do still live in primitive means. Religion is a container for faith,faith/belief/opinion are the only things we have to base ourselves or our society on.We can live as we feel,it may bring us persecution and it may bring fortune,it's always hard to tell. Regardless, I would like to think living as you feel will ultimately result in fulfillment.I don't think we should live any other way.

joyce m, A very good question,Romans 1-19/20 states that all things made of God from creation have been shown all there is to know of God even unto the eternal power & Godhead. It is the spirit of God within your own heart that prompts you to seek truth. However you do not have to follow "christianity". Christianity has its roots in the vedas, vedanta, siddha yoga and hinduism. See www.geocities.com/mihirig/siddhayoga and www.stephen-knapp.com/articles_to_read There are many saints on earth now that have the same power that jesus has,and YOU can talk to them & ask them questions. They do not require you to JOIN any thing. See syda.org/theguru The word Guru means teacher and yoga means union. LOVE

Too many questions in one. I would go ahead and answer all of them because they are interesting. But I am not sure if you are really interested in another opinion or you just want someone to confirm your own beliefs.
