Yes.
I drive an e46 M3 year round. As was mentioned, you'll need snow wheels/tires. An alternative would be to replace the OEM summer tires with all season, but then you sacrifice both summer performance and winter handling. In addition, even the stock rears (255 width) are too wide for snow. I run 225 all the way around for winters, on 17" rims (that barely clear the brakes).
Rear wheel drive is really only really a liability in snow when there isn't weight over the rear wheels (e.g. a pick-up truck). The M3 as 50/50 F/R weight distribution, and I've never had a problem (I live in the mid-Atlantic, but take trips up to New England). It is low, but unless you're breaking trail through the Yukon, odds are that won't be an issue.

Depends on the year and how much snow.
If you put some snow tires on it, you'll get through snow fine.
You'll have an easier time finding winter tires and rims for earlier models (e30 and e36), but the e46 and probably the e90 (when it comes out) have huge stock rims which makes getting wheels difficult.
Also the newer M3's sit lower to the ground, so if you are getting deep snow, I would recommend something else. Also, if you are not familiar with driving a rear wheel drive car in the snow and ice, it can be... fun. It can also be difficult at first.

Why would you want to put an M3 thru the snow? It's designed for handling, not for snow. If you really can afford an M3, you can also afford to buy a cheap 4x4 truck or suv, and keep the M3 in the garage.

I drive a BMW as well and I can tell you this much... light weight, rear wheel drive, high power cars do NOT handle well in the snow at all. The best thing you can do for your BMer is to put her in the garage and buy a piece of crap truck (4 wheeler or rear wheel with 300 lbs of sandbags in the back) to get you through the winter. If you're not used to driving in snow, why would you take a BMer into the ditch when you could just trash a junker and not have to cry about it for weeks afterwards?

You are asking the wrong question. The M3 or any other vehicle doesn't get through snow, its tires do. If you have the proper winter/snow tires fitted onto the M3, it will have no problem traversing snowy roads. Try www.tirerack.com for some good values.

No. The M3 comes standard with performance tires (three season). If you'll need to take that car out in the snow, you'll need a good set of blizzaks.

It's always a bad idea to take a RWD car on the snow. For the snow you really should have a AWD or FWD. RWD often will leave you spinning your tires and go nowhere.
