The Wii remote uses a technology refered to as MEMS (micro electro mechanical system). In short, this is a computer chip that can sense changes in directon and acceleration by measuring the electons within it. This data is sent to the console in real time via a wireless bluetooth connection.

The wireless controllers have accelerometers and other sensors that detect the movement and orientation of the controller. The information is beamed to the main unit to translate the movements into commands to the game.

wow.... the Playstation 3 is way better!
but the Wii just has motion sensors in the controller so when you move the controller it reacts in the way that you moved it.
the ps3 has that too in the controller.

there are sensors in the little handheld stick thingies. when you move it, it senses the movement and uses it with the game
e.g.
Game: Tennis
swing with the stick
character swings in game
