The Second Question: Should there be a limit on blackness or does the 1 drop of blood rule still apply?

Required Reading:
The Boston Globe reports, in order to provoke a debate over racial preferences, the Boston University College Republicans are offering a $250 scholarship that requires the recipient to be at least one quarter white and to have at least a 3.2 grade point average.

Personally, I could care less about the scholarship. What I find problamatic is the Quarter white stipulation. Why set the limit here? Does the NAACP have cut off limites?

What quesions do you have?

NOTE: This is not really a question, but more a chance for us to come together and discuss the social phenominon of "race", whiteness and blackness in the US today.

I think they were just trying to make a rude, sarcastic statement. I believe there should be scholarships for minorities, because we need this in some instances to make a better life, and become better citizens, and honestly, it is owed. It is not discriminatory to offer scholarships to people of color, it is more a form of restitution (which I believe African Americans should be getting from the Tobacco and Cotton industry, to name a few) We made this country rich on free slave labor, and deserve to reap the benefits that many generations of whites have enjoyed from having businesses handed down from generation to generation--I already know that people are going to complain about this, but I mean, realistically, white people get the advantages on a constant basis. I have to work twice as hard to get to the same place.

I don't know much about this to be honest. However I feel that any scholarship pertaining to any race should be socially and legally acceptable. In other words, if a scholarship is only for black people; I wouldn't argue. However I expect that a scholarship only for white people should not be argued against. All other races apply as well.

When somebody or a certain group, club etc. is going to donate money to somebody for school they can write in any stipulations they want. They can make sure you are left handed, play the flute and are in a wheel chair if they want. They can ask that you be a beauty queen from Siberia, Africa or Sweden. Since it is there money that they are freely donating, it is up to them on who gets is and why.

Yes, a lot of scholarships that are geared toward promoting academic affordability amongst a certain ethnic group, often require a minimum rule of how far you can be removed from an ethnic group to qualify.

Hypothetically, if my great great grandpa was Hawaiian, do I still count as Hawaiian? not really.

You don't need 'one drop of blood' or 1/4 of anything to be accepted & recognised as part of a community or minority. If that particular group recognises you as one of their own, then you are. Where does this stupid racism come from?

Oops, sorry, just noticed 'in the U.S. today'.

I believe there is an organization called the United ***** College fund that only gives assistance to blacks. I have never felt that this is OK either. I don't think any of this assistance should have anything to do with race, if it does it is racist.
