Do you think the whole Black Plague thing really ruined their reputation? How do you feel about rats?

Rats are absolutely fantastic pets. Their wild rat cousins' reputation has stained their own reputation a bit, but the rat fancy is growing by leaps and bounds.

There are many individuals out there who now show, breed and love their pet rats. Pedigreed rats are now not out of the question as are rat rescues.

Beyond being intelligent, these animals are extremely clean and very cuddly.

I don't have time for the long answer right now.

Yes, rats have gotten a bad rap and I have information that will tell you of their innocence and how much they themselves suffered during the plague.

I'll gather the info and be back later.

BTW, it was Rattus Rattus, the black rat, that carried the flea, that carried the plague. Our brown rats, Rattus Norvegicus, also know as the familiar barn rat, are innocent of their part in the plague. They weren't even around then. Our pet rats are decended from the Brown Rat.

I'm cleaning a huge building daily, and was told there are rats. I hear, at least one of them munching away on some goodies. I find some rat turds scattered on the floor. Unfortunately and fortunately I am not allowed to clean/clear out the cabinets. Everytime I go into this room where I hear the munching I say "hello". It doesn't give me great comfort to know that rats are crawling around. They have thousands of places to hide and contemplate their moves. I am not very fond of them at ALL>

Wild rats are pretty dirty and disgusting but rats as pets arent. I think that them living in the sewer has ruined there reputation.

Rats can be pretty neat and inexpensive pets. They are dirty people say but regulary cleaning to the cage helps and they clean themselves several times daily. They have personalities and can be quite friendly. My friend had three and two had ten babies each. She didn't keep them but they are interesting. Everyone likes chipmunks and rats and chippies are related. I'd say fish are more dirty then rats with the waste they have.

I think rats are wonderful creatures, they like people, and are 10 times friendlier than hamsters. And because they are so big they are easier to keep track of than hamsters. The only thing I have found wrong with being a rat owner is that they can develope tumors.I lost both of my beloved companions to tumors.

Rats are awesome, loving, loyal and highly intelligent animals that make GREAT pets. I ADORE them! They are more like little dogs than rodents. They are very clean, are not dirty AT ALL and in my 4 yrs of owning them I have only been bitten once, and that is because I accidently hurt him. They are not vicious AT ALL, in fact mine licked me with love. They were the best pets I ever had and my only complaint about them is that they don't live long.

I absolutely love rats. I wasn't too into them until we worked with them in school this year. I'm a 2nd year Vet Tech student. And out of all the rodents we worked with this year, the rats were the easiest and kindest ones.
