Chicago is one of the most Catholic cities in America. Irish isn't the major ethnic group, though. Polish, Filipino and Latino/Hispanic groups are larger and more devout in the Chicago Archdiocese than are the Irish. Chicago is actually the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw. The Puerto Ricans, Mexican, Salvadorans, etc are also a major part of the population of Cook and Lake counties. The real irony is that the Archdiocese of Chicago schools are considered one of the largest "school districts" in the country. They have more children enrolled (~102,000) than do most of the public school districts in the country.

Yes, it is true. I am Irish, was raised Catholic & grew up in the near Chicago suburbs. It's the Irish, in addition to the Italian, Mexican & Polish population.

Yup. Lots of catholics. The city's large Irish population is one of the primary reasons. But I think other religions like Judism, Baptist and Muslim may be closing the gap.
