is it getting ready to or has it jumped time already? it has great power but very hesitant on take-off when i floor it, but when i pump it it takes the @#!$ off.

it runs great, it has good power, it is an '87. when i give it the gas it will sometimes fall on its face then bacofires through the throttle body and take off, not all the time.

have you tuned it up? check firing order ..if ok... take off valve covers and crank over engine if one of the rockers is not going up and down like the rest it has a worn out cam ...one of the lobes could be rounded off.... hope this helps

Need more details...are you trying to keep TBI, or keep the '79 carbed? I will assume carbed. Yes, but you will need a new carbed intake. Intake bolt pattern changed in '86, so you will need an intake that matches that bolt pattern. Exhaust was the same, except there was no heat riser on the TBI truck like there is on the passenger side manifold outlet of your '79's exhaust. There are spacers made that Corvettes used if needed for you. Can probably just force your existing pipe up enough to mate up correctly to the '93 manifolds without the heat riser. You won't need a "points" distributor, those weren't used since 1973, and you'd be insane to dump one of those things in your truck. Any HEI distributor from 1974-1986 (trucks) that weren't 305/CCC will work fine. As long as flexplate is the same tooth count (168) the one on the TBI motor will work with your trans...they are different, but that has to do with the crank bolt pattern, not the external dimensions.

How about a vacuum leak or air leak on the intake somewhere. Backfiring (true backfiring where the flame comes back up the air path looking for gasoline) usually means a lean fuel air mix.

Check the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, then timing, then vacuum leaks. If its on inital acceleration it is lean. you need more fuel less air. On computer cars check for a vacuum leak or dirty TB injector.

What year?? If SMOG equipped it could be caused by a faulty anti-backfire valve or faulty EGR system. Really need more information.

Its either out of time or a flat lobe on cam shaft
