I have encountered this problem. Some troglodytes will tell you, smoke kills no matter what, but I see it as lengthened exposure kills. Seeing as, in your situation, no one was smoking, the logical decision would apparently be to sit in the smoking section. Another logical decision would be to look for a group of non-smokers who had just taken a seat. If they are near a corner or have a seat in between, you will be smoke free until either they or you leave.

I'm not even sure why we have a smoking section in the same room!! It's smoke!! It's floats ad moves!!
