It's because we have become a materialized world, everything is about competition, who has what is better is on top. It's a bunch of crap if you ask me. It should be about families and spending time with the ones you love.

You need to think that by having families and friends get together to exchange do this in basically this order does cause "joy": 1. having family that you rarely see except for thanksgiving or christmas come and viist, 2. sitting down together and being thankful for being able to be together and catch up on what everybody is doing, 3. eating more food than your stomach could EVER hope to hold, 4. exchanging gifts with people that you don't hardly ever see and hope that they like if not love.

If that is good enough for you then I suggest that you just don't bother celebrating Christmas.

You can thank free enterprise/commercialism/capitalism. The presents representative of the gifts brought to baby jesus by the 3 wise men and been perverted from its origin. If we want to live in a capitalistic society, which pretty much we do, then, that is one of the prices we pay. Your own integrity is the only thing that can change it for you.

I think just the fact that you are able to have something is the joy. There is not a lot of things I want this year. But one thing I do want is to spend that day with my family. That there is the joy.

it started when Jesus Christ was born, God gave the gift of baby Jesus. We as Christans, use giving at Christmas to remember that special gift. other religions got the idea from the Christans to give gifts at christmas, than stores like the idea too. So it's not bad to want things, just remember it's better to give than to recieve, and why you are giving this Christmas and to remember what for

To me, it's about both. It's about the carols, the giving and receiving of gifts, the feasts, the family-and-friends get-togethers, and, most importantly, about the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
