Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my original posting. Mr. Fish still lives thanks to all of your helpful advice, but I am having trouble controlling the biology & chemistry of his tank. At the moment, his ammonia & nitrite levels are spiking. I have been treating with Cycle, Prime (to remove ammonia, & detoxify Nitrite & Nitrate). I don't want to add too many chemicals, but am trying to balance that with not changing his water out too quickly so he doesn't go into shock (Followed advice of replicating original tank water sans pathogens and changing out slowly - all was fine until yesterday when the nitrite/ammonia levels starting going way up) . He has air, a filter, heater, etc. PH is 8.0. I have been feeding him algae tabs. Also, it appears there were baby snails in one of the plants as I now have about 5 snails in the tank. Do snails contribute to the ammonia levels? What do I do now? Pls don't say "ask the pet store". I've been to them all & they couldn't help.

OU can change your water a little more frequently and keep your tank aerated (buy 1 or 2 bubble stones or curtains.) Also maybe try to feed him every other day for about 2 weeks. He won't die from not feeding him. Fish can usually be fasted for a few days if need. And if you dont get your nitrite to complete 0 most fish can tolerate about a medium level of nitrite.
