These aren't the same old people, but they had large effects on history.
Eli Whitney, who invented the cotton gin, which gave new life to American slavery, a dying institution at the time of its invention.
Margaret Thatcher, British prime minister.
Golda Meir, Israeli prime minister during Seven Days War and others.
Gengis Khan, warlord.
Emperor Constantine, who brang Christianity to the Roman Empire.
Pope John Paul the Great, who was a good pope at a difficult time.
Louis Pasteur, the man who invented pasteurization and made great advances in hygeine, such as spreading the idea of *washing* knives in between surgeries.
William Wilberforce, a British abolitionist. For many years, Britain's navy would free any slaves on slave ships they found, which led to the demise of the slave trade from Africa. William Wilberforce was why.
...And Elvis, of course.

I'd recommend Leif Ericsson. He actually was the one to discover America. It might not be as informative, but your teacher would appreciate it.
