Tap the end of your finger. Does it feel as if pain is "shooting" up your hand? When you move the end of your finger with your other hand, do you feel any "grating" or is there false joint motion? If you answered yes to these, it may be fractured. No big deal. Buddy tape as mentioned in other posts. Try some OTC anti-inflammatories and wait for it to get better. Same goes for a sprain. Sorry about the injury.

Is it swollen? Can you move it? how long have you had the problem?
If it is broken and misplaced it will be obvious. If it is not misplaced the treatment would be much the same. Use ice to reduce swelling and tape the pinky to the 4th digit as a splint. A break may take a month to resolve.

You can't - only an x-ray can show a fracture in the bone. It doesn't matter really, because both are treated in the same way. All a doctor will tell you to do is tape it to your ring finger for the next few weeks. That way, it can heal while not being bent.
