What is the purpose and/or function of the belly button? I mean it looks like it just sits there near the bottom of the stomach and tries to look pretty. Other than that, what if anything does it do? Or do scientist not yet know?

That is the point where the umbilical cord was attached to you while you were in your mother's womb. On a newborn, after the cord is tied and cut, the remnant of the cord is attached for a few days until the naval has closed and formed your belly button, when it falls off,

It doesn't have a function- well at least not anymore. The belly button is a scar. It is where the umbilical cord used to be attached when the individual was a fetus within the womb. The umbilical cord is the source of oxygen and nurients for the fetus, and it carries away carbondioxide and wastes.

As stated, the umbilicus (belly button), is the "scar" left over from the umbilical cord. Fetal circulation is very different from babies after their birth - remember the fetus does not use it's lungs until after birth. The umbilical cord has 2 arteries and 1 vein. It is cut and clamped after birth, dries up and falls off leaving your "belly button".

The belly button is actually a scar from where they cut the umbilical cord; that's how your mother fed you while in the womb.
