Besides the fact that it has never snowed there?

The weather is obviously a factor, contributing to a very laid back lifestyle. Plus, it's something of a resort area, so there's no heavy industry. Tourists are there to have fun, and the full-timers mostly serve them.

I always liked its location. Look at it on the map, and it's at the end of a highway that jumps over a few dozen bridges from the mainland. Key West is literally the last stop before the gulf/ocean.

conch fritters!! Oh yeah and the sunset over the square... absolutely beautiful with the turquoise water.
