Additives... like anti wear additives, such as zinc, moly, boron, calcium.
Used oil is usually not refined back into engine oil..... but goes to make grease, asphalt, etc like stated above...
BUT there are oils out there being sold as re-refined.... and usually are much cheaper and state that they are re-refined....
Bear in mind, used engine oil is still cleaner than what it came from..... and to re-refine it, they just throw it through the refining process again. Never should you try to clean your own used oil..... not worth the time or money..

not only can it be recycled...it is recycled all the time. All garages and other facilities that collect oil from vehicles have a storage area where they save it until the company comes by. Normally it is not recycled into engine oil though...although some years ago they did that too. Normally it is recycled and used in oil burning furnaces...used in the manufature of asphalt...and many other uses.
So yes..it can be recylced...but not by simply filtering it...there is a process...I wish I could tell you the process but if you do a search I'm sure you can find out how it's done.

Motor oil is regularly recycled but you cant do it yourself. It is actually re-refined and then additives are added and it is sold as an inexpensive motor oil. Some of the additives that are used in motor oil are anti foaming agents, You might find more info if you google SAE This stands for the Society of American Engineers and that is the body that regulates oils used in motor vehicles.

It can be recycled, but no way should you reuse old oil. Spend the $20 and get some new oil! That old stuff is full of sludge, little bits of metal, unburned fuel, and all the additives will have broken down. The cost of new oil is a lot cheaper than a new engine.

back in the 60's they used to sell it recycled and they called it bulk oil and a quart of it cost .10., it was great to use in a car that burned a lot of oil.

unless you have you re' own personal refinery and lab, you cannot recycle your own waste oil. but you can take it to any auto zone, napa, anywhere they change oil and the will take it to be recycled free of charge. and thank you for making a effort to keep waste oil out of the landfills and out of the environment.

It has to be reprocessed. They make a furnace that burns old motor oil for heat.

it also needs to have the additives put back in that are used up over time in the engine.
